Review of stock route management regulation and strategy

After extensive consultation, we’re taking the final steps in our plan to review and enhance the management of Queensland’s iconic 72,000-kilometre stock route network.

The Land and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023 amended the Stock Route Management Act 2023, clarifying and simplifying processes for both state and local governments.

The changes support local government to manage the stock route network by:

  • allowing councils to charge an application fee, which will apply from 1 July 2023. The fee can be waived for hardship (for example, during floods)
  • directing all stock route network fees to councils, to be reinvested in the network
  • creating less red tape for councils to undertake stock route planning.

Stock route regulation

Amended stock route management regulation will be released later in 2023.

Proposed changes to the Stock Route Management Regulation 2003 were released for consultation in 2021.

The consultation report - stock routes discussion paper (PDF, 902.7KB) summarises the outcomes of the consultation and forms the foundation of the new regulation.

Network management strategy

Following consultation with stakeholders and the community, the new Stock Route Network Management Strategy 2021-2025 (PDF, 893.9KB) has been released to efficiently direct and coordinate the management of the stock route network.
